What are you lookin at?

So here I sit at a place called Daydream island in australia. This is one of the best places in oz. I did my first set on tuesday night on an open mike night and I wish I could lie like those other comics and say that I killed since noone was around to say how it went. You know those comics that say they killed but you never see them kill but they tell you they kill but everytime you see them suck.

Well not me oh no. I sucked harder then I have in years and that is the beauty of standup. Just when you think that you are going to do well boom. I get less of a reaction then wynona ryder at a ping pong competition. It was at the sydney comedy store and of course I have to start off the set and make fun of australia and then someone says "Piss off" and that gets a big laugh. It only went down from there.

To be honest the whole show was underwhelming to say the least. A bunch of guys went on and did some new stuff and wowed the small crowd but to me it was pretty lame. The one thing I am getting sick of is the new found form of comedy where people act like they don't give a shit and seem under prepared and then they complain about the set they have to do and that is part of their act. They barely do three jokes that are remotely funny and that is it in a seven minute set, but all the rest of their time is spent jerking off. I am sorry but look motherfucker just get to your jokes and get off. Yes there are a few people who can use this technique to great effect but for most it is massage parlour level jerkin.

When sets are few and far between it starts to really bother me that people think they can just go up and wing it. Most comics that think they can wing it suck and are not getting the laughs they think they get period. This is one of the reasons I stopped going to certain venues in toronto cause there was more jerking off then funny. The crowd would eat it up and then when someone would go on and do great prepared material they would barely get a reaction. I understand that people all want to be andy kaufman but lets not forget that the only reason that was refreshing is cause no one else was doing it. It is like when Mitch Hedburg came out...every all of a sudden had the same articulation it was just sad.

When there are really funny guys who can't get sets due to politics that are funny and have jokes and don't hum and haw it just ........

why do I bother.
