It is something we all need to be reminded of from time to time.
Just a little patience. Axl was right
I know this is the pot calling the kettle but today I witnessed it twice, where I was like I have to slow down and not get so worked up like this guy. Twice in less then 45 minutes of being out of the house, two guys were berating someone cause they either did not get service fast enough or did not agree with someone.
How long it too long to wait..it is the age old question isn't it. I guess it is all context really but how many times have we knew after getting home, we could have and should have waited before getting our backs up.
Even in my business you have to have patience cause nothing happens over night for anyone. Look at the two biggest stars canada has: Brent Butt and Russell Peters. Both have been doing this longer then me and are seen by some as an overnight thing.
I feel bad for the overnight sensations cause you know they never asked for it. Some did of course but I feel bad for the few it was forced on. You only get one shot and if you are not ready for it rarely does it come back around again.
I mean you can put in years and years of quality work and still seen as the I didn't do it kid.
Everyone is chasing something to hold on to. Few see hard work as the reason to keep going. Few have the patience to put in the time to then be called the overnight sensation.
This years hottest new thing..funniest comic who doesn't do standup.....every angle resized and shaped for mass consumption to fit an agenda.
We the people can't think for ourselves according to the people in charge. Even when it comes to what funny is...many people have to be told.
I remember a few years ago the comedy network in my own country was telling me that five people are the funniest comics working in the country. Only one would be on the list if you asked anyone in the know.
Now we have the largest joke called the canadian comedy awards. This is a group of people who are trying to fool the public in telling you who the funniest comics are working.
Before you call out the bitter police, I never have been on the list and never want to cause I never fit an agenda and I like it that way. I don't even think I am in the top twenty funniest working comics in the country.
Every year comics around the country laugh and sneer at the list of the top five. They sneer long enough till their name is on the list. Then they change their toon "hey it is just cool to be listed". Sounds like someone likes to be in the top five after all.
I remember the first year of the comedy awards and everyone put on their best behavior cause the comedy network was going to change all of our lives. No one wanted to bad mouth anyone and wreck the party. Then a few members of the sketch troup Bobroom got hammered and thrown out. They could not even be let back in to accept their award.
Now that to me was funny.
The whole idea of the canadian comedy awards is flawed before you start cause it is voted on by actors and comedians. But guess what, actors out weigh comedians in the category by thousands. What the fuck does an actor know about standup. They don't even know the people in the category.
So what happens..people that have had success in tv win. Hell if I was on the ballot I would win cause i have worked with a lot of actors over the years.
Maybe I could win the 2007 best improvisor award.
If I wait long enough it will be my turn and I will have to decide.
I've been walking these streets at night
Just trying to get it right
It's hard to see with so many around
You know I don't like being stuck in a crowd
And the streets don't change but maybe the name
I ain't got time for the game
just a little patience

Well put Darren. I have never believed much in the CCA because politics always comes into play.
If you ever do get nominated and win, they make a great door stop or paper weight!!
Art forms cannot be judged. this is also why so many contests suck and taint the art form.
As for the Comedy Awards, if I get nominated, I'll go but man do I have a great speech lined up!! I would rather get another TV special than an award that is not even televised to the public. What a farce!
