I have never wanted to be a leader. Never saw the benefit to it. I would rather be the guy who just does what he wants, and doesn't have to live up to anything.
I never wanted to be a follower either. I have followed in the past but that was due to the fact that I simply agreed with the leader on a certian point and so be it. The main problem with being a follower is that you eventually lose the ability to think critically. There is no one that I agree with 100 per cent on every issue and what a boring talk that would be if there was a person like that.
There are lots of great comics I admire and know they are better then I will ever be but I still disagree with them on many issues. I feel it can almost be the blind leading the blind the way some comics follow others around like lap dogs. They agree with everything they say. Young comics want to be accepted and I understand that but eventually like any cult you have to wake up and put the scifi book down.
Too many people want to be leaders these days it seems. Everyone has advice to show people on how they are doing things wrong. Sure I give advice but I admit that I am a fuck up. I tell people I am a bitter fat fuck so do what you will with such advice. I tell people that I burn bridges and people don't want to hear the truth sometimes. That eventually my career will be nothing but a smaller flickering light in a rainstorm.
Most people forget that the best way to become leader is to lead by example. You don't need to say gather around children and listen to my words of wisdom. You let people come to you.
The problem in comedy is that a lot of comics seen as great, start to gain a messiah complex. They start to believe their own shit. They believe that they are always right. That their comedy is superior to others just because a few comics have told them that or worse a few tv execs. They are able to turn water into a simple dick joke.
I like to argue like the best of them and I have fallen prey to ego from time to time. That is human and I am aware of my faults. I remember when I was not in comedy, that you could disagree with someone and it was not that big of a deal. You could simply say how you felt and so be it.
Now comedy seems to be like a bad softball team. The players that yell or disagree are benched and have to scream a little louder. Like racoons hissing in the night. If you don't agree with the others then you are not on our team Darren.
Sometimes to not run with the herd is the best way to remember why you did this in the first place. You remember that you did comedy for the joke not the back slapping of a little bitch comic or a leader in training.
