I have received many people's opinion on the last blog and I appreciate your feedback.
Most laugh and cannot beleive the lengths I will go for a laugh or make a point.
For years I have had closer friendships with female comics then most male comics. I have never felt part of the boys club of the industry. I have always felt like an outsider and liked it that way.
When that article came out and was so disrespectful of the art of stand up it enraged me. Now why would it do so...most will think it is because I am jealous of the press. I have talked countless times about press in the city of toronto that the faithful readers don't need me to go over that again.
Why was I angry...
I feel it is setting comedy back 50 years to be pushing something called "Sexiest comic"..and she says "I don't care if they yell show us your tits". Well I do cause I have seen it on the road. I have seen it where a comic dies a horrible death and to make it worse the crowd uses the sexual object card. It ain't pretty.
Many female comics have fought hard to get past that stigma. To me this is no better then "stay in the kitchen". Why do people love ellen so much? It is because she is funny first ..likeable second and way down the list she is female. Why do fans of comedy love margeret smith..cause she is intelligent and writes some of the best jokes out there.
I know this comic is young and grasping at straws for attention but in the end she is forgeting where the art came from. It is no different then a black guy who sits at the back of the bus and says
"I don't know why rosa parks put up such a fuss...I kinda like it back here...I love smell of exhaust"
Also the obvious ..what the fuck does sexy have to do with comedy when they are mutually exclusive. It is like shopping for a doctor and wanting one that is hot. I mean my male doctor is quite the looker so it makes the whole turn and cough thing more manageable. Also i don't have to explain when I get hard at my prostate exam..he thinks it is his finger. wah wah
The one thing they got right is the description of "the barbie of comedy". Fake ..plastic...and only for the mentality of 13 yr olds. Don't even get me started about the material she was quoted on. Canadatown in china wah wah...radio ads for the deaf...what is next....
One final point is the use of the word sexy. Sexy is different to different people. I know there are guys who might be attracted to the chair I am sitting in and find it sexy the way the back slinks and curves.
Yeah there will be some that will be like he is just jealous of her looks..if anyone knows me they know I would rather fuck concrete then put up with the conversations you have with the "barbie of comedy". "why are there such bad people in the world" "You know what I hate ..lineups at the bank machine" "Don't you hate it when you buy a bra and then you get it home and a week later you don't fit into it cause they grew tee hee"
Sexy is in the eye of the beholder.
Robin Williams in the body of heather locklear..and just like robin and his jokes those tits aren't hers either wah wah
It is sad that our industry is no better then the paper that sells this angle. We all know that the written word and connecting with an audience ranks lower then looks and that star appeal.
I knew it well before that article came out I just don't need the constant reminder.

Bravo Darren!!....I love it when someone is honest and not afraid to tell the truth outloud...while the rest just think it. You are a real standup comedian...Brave and True!!
Darren, you're right, but press is funny. Weird, undeserving stuff gets covered all the time. It's the big lie theory-if something is repeated enough times, it gets believed, even by those who once didn't. It's the reason I once thought Paris Hilton's face was fucked up, and then wanted to do the fucking to that face. Anyway,if the stupid are fooled by somebody acting as if it's rare for a woman to be funny and attractive, it's sadly unavoidable. All we can do is hilariously rail against it.
You're right, obviously. Just awful. This was in the Toronto Sun wasn't it? Guess that figures.
you're right darren, we all know female comedians aren'y sexy.
Nice one, Darren.
Its not about jealousy or working what you got to get ahead. Its about respecting the art we've worked so hard to bring an intelligent and deserving reputation to.
Thank goodness not everyone is taking it lying down...on their backs...legs in the air...etc.
