What are you lookin at?

So this week I went and watched the musical the Evil Dead in downtown toronto to celebrate my anniversary of my marriage with my wife. That in itself deserves its own blog on choosing that show to celebrate my anniversary but I digress.

The one thing you notice right away when you are a dick joke/xrated/edgy/dirty/dark/foul/(insert catchy descriptive adjective) comic is that when you go somewhere outside of your normal performing space how much people love dick jokes and swearing.

The same people who would never be caught dead at a comedy club because they believe it is below their intelligence or just a bunch of potty mouth comics really love dick jokes when they pay 40 bucks for it in a theatre. Something about the curtuins or the walls ..or maybe the overpriced perrier water at intermission. Or is it the fact they need an intermission to break the flow of the show.

Now of course the show called Evil Dead the musical can not be the only barameter of the point I am trying to make. I just always find it funny when those that judge the kind of comedy I do always love it when it is in a pretty pretty wrapping.

This even happens when it comes to certain clean comics. See to me innuendo is still a dick joke even though you never said the word cock. If you are talking about sex or anything related to it...still a dick joke. They still love to brag that they are clean and then the crowd goes nuts any time they even broach the dirtier subjects like a little bit of a cock tease.

The problem with my arguement is that there are tons of comics that do dirty jokes but they don't do it well. They just swear a lot and talk dirty and that is not what I am trying to defend here. When you take away the language and shock there is little humour left. It takes one bad dick joke comic to justify the uptight cunts to run to other venues and laugh at people saying Fuck alot for 70 bucks a ticket (includes show program of people you don't give a fuck about).

Maybe I am desensitized to the language since I swear a lot myself and it doesn't bother me to hear it.

I am also not impressed by it either.
